UK CV Tips for Immigrants
UK CVs are different from CVs in other countries. Learn the rules that UK recruiters expect.
📄 1. Keep It to 2 Pages Maximum
- UK recruiters spend 6-8 seconds on initial CV scan
- <strong>1 page</strong> if you have less than 5 years experience
- <strong>2 pages</strong> maximum for experienced professionals — never more
- Use a clean, professional font (Arial, Calibri, Helvetica) at 10-12pt
🚫 2. What NOT to Include (UK Rule)
In many countries, CVs include personal details. In the UK, this is seen as unprofessional and can lead to unconscious bias.
NEVER include
❌ Photo / headshot
❌ Date of birth / age
❌ Nationality / country of origin
❌ Marital status / children
❌ Religion / political views
❌ National Insurance number
DO include
✅ Full name
✅ Email address
✅ Phone number
✅ City (not full address)
✅ LinkedIn profile (optional)
✅ Right to work status (optional)
📋 3. The Correct UK CV Structure
- Personal Details — name, email, phone, city
- Professional Summary — 2-3 sentences, tailored to the job
- Work Experience — most recent first, with achievements
- Education — qualifications, most recent first
- Skills — languages, technical, soft skills
- Certifications — relevant professional certifications
- References — "Available upon request" is standard
🎯 4. Use Action Verbs
Start each bullet point with a strong action verb. Show what you DID, not just what you were responsible for.
❌ Weak
Responsible for cleaning rooms
Helped with customer service
Was in charge of the team
✅ Strong
Maintained 15 rooms to 5-star hygiene standards
Resolved 50+ customer queries daily with 95% satisfaction
Led a team of 8, reducing turnover by 20%

🌟 5. Tailor Your CV to Each Job
- Read the job description carefully — mirror their keywords
- Rewrite your professional summary for each application
- Highlight relevant experience and skills — remove irrelevant ones
- Many UK employers use ATS (automated screening) — matching keywords is essential
🎓 6. Foreign Qualifications — How to Present Them
- Add the UK equivalent next to your qualification: <strong>"BSc Computer Science (equivalent to UK 2:1)"</strong>
- Use <strong>ENIC-NARIC</strong> (now ECCTIS) to get an official UK equivalency statement
- If your qualification name is not in English, translate it
- <strong>Languages are a major asset</strong> — always list them prominently
